Past Tense Meaning with Examples

In English, Past tense tells us about the activities or events that happened at the pastime. We use helping verbs such as -“was/were/had” for past tenses. For Examples:

  • My brother bagged a gold medal in 1000 mtr. marathon.
  • They were creating a new blueprint for this presentation.
  • Her sister had gifted her a novel before she purchased it.
  • I had been mastering my culinary skills for months.

Past Tense is categorized into 4 types:

a) Simple Past Tense

The simple past tense is used to reveal the habits, activities, or situations that happened in the past. There is no helping verb used in the simple past tense.

b) Past Continuous Tense

The past continuous tense depicts the actions or events that were continued in the past. The helping verbs (was/were) used in the past continuous tense tense with the base verb 1st form and by adding “ing”.

Important point to remember

  • When two activities were happening at the same time in past, then we have to refer to the past continuous tense for both activities.

For Example

While my sister was decorating the house, I was checking the guest list.

c) Past Perfect Tense

The past perfect tense is used when two events happened in the past and the first event is completed before the completion of the second event. Always use simple past tense for the second event that happened later and past perfect tense for the first event that completed earlier.

d) Past Perfect Continuous Tense

The past perfect continuous tense is used to put stress on those activities that happened in a past at a specific time.
